Unknown Sadness

performance video (4:43)

This piece is a staring contest based on the eastern meditative practice of 'Tratak' or 'fixed gazing.'  The rules are we are not to break our gaze.  We are not to blink for as long as we can or lose our close proximity.  To accomplish this, we must be completely present to prevent the blinking reflex.  In a natural response to re-moistening the eyes, the body begins to tear.  We appear as though we are crying and our intensity provokes genuine emotion.
